Lt Gen Mohinder Puri is renowned for his steadfast courage, strategic acumen, and outstanding operational leadership. Throughout his tenure, he set unmatched standards for the Indian Army. In 2006, he retired from the Army after a distinguished career that included a variety of command and staff appointments. The President of India awarded him the prestigious Param Vishisht Seva Medal and Uttam Yudh Seva Medal in recognition of his exceptional contributions.
Lt. Gen Puri’s book “Kargil: Turning the Tide” is a first-hand account of the war and captures the emotions and sentiments of a soldier; the apprehensions and fears of the leaders and finally the joy and ecstasy of a hard-won victory, which cost the Division 268 killed in action, while being awarded three Param Vir Chakras and eight Mahavir Charas.
During the Kargil War, as General Officer Commanding the famous 8 Mountain Division, he led the country’s counteroffensive to restore the sanctity of the Line of Control by capturing Tololing and Tiger Hill which became household names. This monumental achievement showcased his exceptional operational acumen and established him as a symbol of unwavering determination.
As the Military Secretary at Army Headquarters, Lt Gen Puri shouldered the responsibility of managing the career development of over thirty thousand officers, ensuring the robustness of the entire Indian Army. Subsequently, as the Deputy Chief of the Army Staff, he played a pivotal role in formulating and implementing the Army’s IT roadmap. He also oversaw all training, sports, and adventure activities and led Indian Army contingents on peacekeeping missions across troubled regions of the world.
Beyond his military career, Lt Gen Puri has continued to add value by sharing his knowledge with society. He has served as advisor, vice president, and board member for renowned organizations, leveraging his expertise in infrastructure development, security, and strategic solutions.
Lt. Gen Puri is an active panellist and speaker participating in various literature festivals, seminars, and conventions, sharing his profound insights on leadership and the Kargil War. He has delivered motivational lectures on leadership and motivation at prestigious institutions and platforms, including the Indian Military Academy, the United Services Institution, Chinmaya Missions, and Rotary Clubs across India. He has also participated in group discussions on leadership during the Kargil War with various corporates and organisations.
