Manjari Jaruhar is one of the first five women police officers in India and the first from the state of Bihar. Her memoir ‘Madam Sir’ is a bestseller.
After retiring as Special Director General of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Manjari is currently an Advisor for Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Senior Advisor for 9.9 Media and Advisor to the Committee on Private Security Industry at FICCI. She was also the Chief Coordinator of the Indian Music Industry (IMI).
Manjari was selected for the Indian Police Service (IPS), the elite crime prevention and law enforcement cadre of the Indian Civil Service, in 1976 and has held positions in the State Governments of Bihar and Jharkhand, the National Police Academy (NPA), the CISF and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). She has led teams in a wide range of complex and challenging assignments that have prepared her for a career in the private and social sectors.
From fighting crime to administering a massive organisation, Manjari has shown exemplary leadership in a domain traditionally dominated by men. She is the recipient of the Government of India’s Police Medal for Meritorious Service and the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service. She was awarded the Director General’s Commendation Disc for outstanding service twice in the CISF and once when in the CRPF.
Manjari specialises in the security and protection of large undertakings, recruitment and personnel management, management training and all gender-related issues. Since the enactment of the law on Sexual Harassment in the Workplace, she has been invited frequently to share her experiences by several organizations. She also speaks on gender sensitization, safety and security and legal awareness of women.
Manjari visited Afghanistan on the invitation of OXFAM and Research Institute of Women Peace and Security to help them understand the changes and improvements required to raise an effective women’s police force.
